Week 26 at the Pole
Ah, the 4th of July—barbecues everywhere, even at the South Pole. But, not only is it winter there now, with snow and ice, it’s been extremely cold lately, with long stretches of low temperatures, down to below –100 °F. So while most July 4th celebrations are held outdoors in parks or backyards, under a blazing sun, at the South Pole they stuck to the station galley (with some festive red-white-and-blue decorations) for their meal and to the gym for their fun and games ("Corn Hole!"). Last week also saw a lot of detector activity and a regular training session, this one a mass casualty drill simulating a glycol leak in the power plant. No fun and games there.
