Week 32 at the Pole

Kids, don’t try this at home. At least not without proper equipment. Here some winterovers are learning to use what they call the “confidence chair,” a specialized piece of equipment for evacuating injured people from multilevel buildings. No one was really injured in this case. But since they are isolated for about nine months of the year, folks that winter over at the South Pole need to be able to handle any type of issue or emergency that might arise during that time. They train before heading to the Pole, but they continue their training while on site, participating in a wide range of activities where they can practice their skills, like suturing. A class building lightweight alcohol stoves for backpacking is shown below.
