Week 40 at the Pole

The IceCube Lab has accumulated quite a bit of snow over the winter. And that snow must be cleared away. We saw in the previous week that they had cleared out the marker at the ceremonial Pole, now onto the ICL and other structures—there is plenty to shovel before planes bringing fresh crew arrive. Also last week, winterovers helped out with NOAA balloon launches as there are more frequent launchings during the ozone hole season. IceCube winterover John captured a photo of a balloon after launch, shown below. (It’s there, look closely.) Finally, they capped off their week with a water tasting competition. You know, because some people have strong feelings on whether or not water from all drinking fountains tastes the same.
