Week 15 at the Pole

There’s a first time for everything, including seeing an aurora waft across the winter sky at the South Pole. And that first came up last week for IceCube’s winterovers John and Yuya. They aren’t the only winterovers excited by the onset of aurora season. Monitors in the galley are tracking weather data, like wind direction and KP-index, and there’s lots of buzz around the station regarding aurora forecasts. Yuya also captured a nice shot of the moon and some planets over the flags at the ceremonial Pole and, at the bottom, two frosty, inactive IceCube drill towers—you can see one of the towers in the group photo here.
