The South Pole station officially closed for winter last week, although they’re still expecting mail and cargo deliveries. But all the nonwinter personnel have departed, with not one but two LC-130 planes arriving last week to take folks home. Some people had been waiting for a while due to flight delays (they happen). The photo above is of the last IceCubers to leave the Pole, happy to travel back north after a job well done. The winterovers, on the other hand, are there for the long haul and will now settle into life at the station with a much smaller group.
