Last week was the first time this year that temperatures dipped to -100 °F, what one winterover deemed “properly cold.” The moon was out, though, so they didn’t let the extreme cold stop them from enjoying the clear skies for outdoor photography. They were also having fun last week with the Winter International Film Festival of Antarctica, for which the South Pole station submitted two entries, one to the open competition and one to the 48-hour category. Both of IceCube’s winterovers participated, and voting on entries will take place over the next few weeks. As they’re in astronomical twilight now at the Pole, the skies will appear brighter by the time the film festival outcomes are determined.
