Let’s raise a glass! Of hot water, that is. Thrown into an arc overhead, a spray of hot water in very cold air temperatures quickly transforms into a spray of tiny ice crystals, often referenced as the Mpemba effect. You don’t need to be at the South Pole to try this, just very cold ambient temperature. Last week at the Pole, things were generally quiet, with a few notable things. IceCube’s winterovers were involved in filming and interviews with Swedish television crews (following recent events), which included a Zoom call with Francis and others in Wisconsin. At the station, the first plane arrived, a Twin Otter, whose crew stayed overnight. A second plane, a Basler, also arrived last week, bringing a welcome supply of fresh fruit and vegetables for the station to enjoy.
