Week 20 at the Pole

Sometimes it feels almost as if the auroras are trying to say something, scrawling an unintelligible script across the sky. Last week at the Pole, IceCube’s winterovers were out at the IceCube Lab, checking on the IceACT unit up on the roof and capturing some nice images of the auroras and stars. They have been taking regular photos of the IceCube drill camp this winter, shown in second photo below—looking rather peaceful at the moment, but next summer the drill will be quite active when work for the IceCube Upgrade field season begins. The station team was treated to a video call last week with Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise. Haise talked about his work on Apollo and other space programs, and he saved time at the end to answer questions from the audience.
