The theme for last week at the Pole was “tall.” IceCube winterover Marc captured a nice photograph of the moon shining brightly through some striated clouds, with the ARO tower shown front and center. ARO stands for Atmospheric Research Observatory, which is located in the Clean Air Sector at the South Pole. In the summer season of 2019, photographer Shaun O’Boyle visited IceCube and took a captivating photo of the ARO tower as well, in a series of black and white photos of IceCube and other neighboring facilities. The winterovers were busy last week with lots of different activities, one of which was emergency response training. The goal of their search and rescue team exercise was trying to build the highest tower possible from cardboard boxes while standing on top of it. Winterover Marc got a pretty tall tower going. The harness really came in handy though as the stability of the tower eventually gave way.
