Week 25 at the Pole

It was a green sky last week as the biggest aurora storm of the season swept over the South Pole. Sometimes you need a long camera exposure to capture a fantastic aurora scene. But IceCube winterover Yuya claimed that last week, even with just your eyes, you saw the entire sky filled with the bright green swirls. Yuya and John needed to trek out to the IceCube Lab (ICL) to uncover the newly upgraded IceAct telescope mounted on the ICL rooftop. It was cold and it’s always extra windy on the roof, but the explosion of auroras overhead made for such nice sky viewing and photos that it hardly mattered. What a different view just a few months ago—the last image shows the same spot under a clear blue sky.
