Week 35 at the Pole

The satellite dome sits frosted over as it waits for the sunrise—here it’s shown backlit by a full moon. It’s a peaceful scene, which is also how IceCube’s winterovers generally described last week at the Pole. At least as far as IceCube was concerned. But there was a definitely nonpeaceful activity that Raffaela took part in last week. After discovering a pallet of soda cans that had been accidentally frozen and from which some of the cans had exploded, the winterover crew decided the best way to deal with the remaining ready-to-burst-any-minute cans was to induce the explosion in a controlled manner. Decked out in safety goggles and Tyvek suits, Raffaela was part of the task force for that operation. They can’t help it if it turned out to be a bit of fun.
