Week 48 at the Pole

The many flight delays this season affected the arrival of not only personnel but cargo, too. It eventually showed up though, and last week IceCube’s winterovers were busy managing it all at the IceCube Lab. About a ton of new batteries had to be carried to the second floor of the ICL, while another ton or so had to be removed for recycling. It was exhausting, but they were still smiling after it was all said and done. Last week they also had a tour of the power plant and went to an open house hosted by the nice folks of the South Pole Traverse, seen below along the horizon as it was arriving. At bottom, a group photo of happy “neutrino-hunting” summer personnel.
