Week 37 at the Pole

balloon time lapse

Up, up, and away. That’s a NOAA balloon launch shown in a time-lapse photo—pretty nice! Last week at the Pole was all about the camera. IceCube winterover Christian took advantage of a quiet week to set up his camera in a window of the unused dorm wing. He can let it run for days or weeks since it’s configured to be able to swap the power pack without interruption. Even so, it can’t be left completely hands off for too long since wind-blown snow can accumulate on the window, requiring an occasional sweeping to clear it off. The final image shows a striking panorama shot that Christian took of the soon-to-emerge sun.
