The darkness of night tells us that we’re in the Earth’s shadow. But who thinks about the Earth’s shadow during the day? Actually, it’s often visible but we fail to recognize it. The Earth is constantly casting a shadow on its atmosphere, and during sunrise and sunset, with clear weather conditions and the proper viewing perspective, it can be seen as a bluish band along the horizon, as captured at the South Pole in the photo above. Back at the station, it was pizza night—a night off for the regular galley staff—with other station personnel, IceCube winterover Ian Rees included, taking over meal preparation duties.
