The detector was behaving, so IceCube’s winterovers had sufficient time to fit in a number of routine maintenance tasks. Last week at the Pole saw plenty of fun, too. Each winter, once it gets dark enough, the station covers up all of its windows to prevent light from interfering with light-sensitive projects at the South Pole. This year they decided to have a contest for the window cover art entries, some of which are shown above (we don’t know who may have won yet). Cardboard is used to make the window coverings, and it looks like some of the extra cardboard was put to good use. They also celebrated “Yuri’s Night” last week, one of many yearly traditions at the Pole, this one in honor of the first person in space.
