OK, so the weather’s cold (June average of -64° F), but there was lots of “cool” stuff at the Pole last week for IceCube’s winterovers. First up, an extremely starry sky thanks to clear weather and near maximum darkness. Then, there was an investigation of temperatures in the “doghouse” (a communication antenna hut installed on the roof of the IceCube Lab) using a thermal imaging device, which incidentally showed that winterover John is also a “cool” guy. And last but not least, a visit to the VMF provided a show of caterpillars and their engines—pretty cool.
