Water restrictions prompt innovation. When already limited showers get rationed even further, as they have been recently at the South Pole station, you start thinking of ways to work around the problem. The “R&D” effort that ensued is demonstrated by winterover Ian Rees—after melting some snow (this involved a bucket and an old coffee maker), letting it flow (from a 5-gallon keg held up overhead). In his spare time, Ian was also working on a non-water-restriction project last week. We don’t know exactly what it is, but step one involved hacking off a chunk of aluminum with a bandsaw.
