- Abstract:A search for TeV - PeV muon neutrinos from unresolved sources was performed
on AMANDA-II data from 2000 to 2003. The diffuse analysis seeks to find an
extraterrestrial neutrino signal that is dwarfed by large atmospheric muon
and neutrino backgrounds. The Earth was used as a filter to keep only the
highest quality events from neutrinos travelling from the far side of the
Earth. Since atmospheric neutrinos have a steeper spectrum (E^-3.7) than the
signal (E^-2), the two types of events can be separated with an energy cut.
Due to large uncertainties in the atmospheric neutrino flux, multiple models were tested. Since no excess of events was seen in the data over the
expected background, an upper limit was placed on the diffuse flux of muon
neutrinos with an E^-2 spectrum. Limits were also placed on models of prompt
and astrophysical neutrinos with other energy spectra.
